WEATHER AND CLIMATE IN ALGERIA

Oddly enough, Algeria's weather is not easily predicted from one year to another -- the months when seasons change vary from year to year. But some generalizations can be made: Coastal areas have a mild climate, hot in the summer and cool and rainy in the winter (take winter clothing and rain gear if you're visiting northern areas any time from November until April). On the highland plateaus farther inland, summers are hot and dry, and winter rains (which are less heavy) begin in October.

The Sahara is almost always hot and dry (temperatures can reach 130 F/55 C in the shade and are hottest in May), though you may be caught in one of the few rains that occur annually. Temperatures in the desert are coolest in January and February. Dust storms and sandstorms are most frequent February-May, but we enjoy May in the north, when the red poppies and yellow mustard are in bloom, the green wheat is coming up and the Atlas Mountains are alive in vivid violet and ocher. Nights are very cool everywhere, so take at least a sweater year round.
