HOTEL DESCRIPTION: The Protea Hotel Balalaika Sandton is a home away from home ideally located in the financial epicenter and commercial hub of Sandton, Maude Street, Johannesburg, South Africa and approximately 30 minutes from O.R. Tambo International Airport. The hotel is directly linked to the Village Walk Shopping Centre which comprises of numerous restaurants, shops, pharmacy and an African Curio Market. The Hotel is also within walking distance of the Sandton City Shopping Centre, Nelson Mandela Square and the Sandton Convention Centre. Johannesburg Stock Exchange is on our doorstep as well as Deutsche Bank, Nedbank, RMB, HSBC and Investec, which makes us the perfect hotel for those doing business in Sandton and surrounding areas. The Hotel has 330-bedrooms spread over two sections – the Balalaika and the Crown Court –each room is air-conditioned and tastefully furnished in a classic, comfortable style with its own en suite bathroom featuring a separate shower. The rooms are regularly refurbished and are spread over two sections: the Balalaika and the Crown Court, with a total of 18 Crown Court Executive Suites, 4 Crown Court deluxe rooms, 8 Balalaika two-bedroomed family suites, 1 Balalaika one-bedroomed suite, 193 king-bedded rooms, 104 twin-bedded rooms and 2 rooms with special amenities for the comfort of physically challenged guests. Each room is luxuriously carpeted and curtained, tastefully furnished in a classic yet comfortable style and beautifully appointed, containing: private bathrooms with separate showers (the Crown Court suites offer the additional luxury of private spa baths); individually controlled air-conditioning and heating; television with DSTV selection of local and international channels; radio; electronic safes; mini-bars available upon request; tea and coffee station and executive work-desks with multiple plug and modem points. Both the Balalaika and the Crown Court sections have their own lush, landscaped gardens and sparkling swimming pool where guests can relax, unwind and momentarily experience the timelessness and calm of a bygone era.
HOTEL FACILITIES: The Bull Run, situated opposite the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton, has fast built up a reputation as the business-lunch or dinner restaurant of choice. The subtle décor - raw brick walls and ambient lighting - and a menu that sets out the offerings in either Rands, Dollars, Pounds or Euros, ensures that the atmosphere is warm, relaxed and yet still conducive to any pre-dinner business dealings that may take place. When the business at hand turns to gastronomy, enjoy one of the Bull Run’s prime cuts of South African beef – direct from the in-house butchery - and speak to your waiter about a wine pairing from the extensive list of Cape wines on offer. If you opt for a starter before your meal, you’ll be hard-pressed to choose from the extensive list, which includes Bull Run classics such as the spicy wors or smoked Springbok Carpaccio. The seafood selection is fresh and plentiful - oysters, mussels, calamari, linefish, prawns or crayfish – and chicken or ostrich complete the variety on offer. While the Bull Run may be famed for it’s steaks, there is certainly no skimping on the vegetable offerings. Those opting for more herbivorous pleasures may enjoy a wide range of garden-fresh, unique salads – such as the Bull Run prawn Ritz or smoked salmon and rosti salad – or opt for a purely vegetarian platter, curry, burger or pasta; with a variety of hot veg – such as honey baked butternut and creamed spinach – available on the side. When the dinner deal is done, visit the Bull Run’s well-stocked bar and toast it with a tumbler of the finest whiskey or cognac, accompanied by a cigar from the selection of finely-crafted, hand-rolled cigars. The Bull Run caters for up to 220 guests, with seating for 40 guests on the terrace. Functions of all kinds – from private parties to corporate events – can be accommodated and catered for by arrangement. The Bull Run is open Monday to Sunday (excluding Saturday lunch) and is safe and easily accessible: patrons can park underground and take a lift directly up to the restaurant, with CCTV and 24hr-security.
