Steenberg hold the distinction of being the oldest farm in the picturesque Constantia Valley, which is generally considered to be South Africa’s premier wine growing region. With its cool, sea-facing slopes and majestic granite ridges, this vineyard has developed a worldwide reputation for producing excellent Cape wines. The land was originally granted to a widow, Catharina Ras, in 1682. Wines were first produced on the farm in 1695. The farm was first known as Swaaneweide – the feeding place of swans; it was only later renamed as Steenberg, in honour of the imposing mountain which towers over it. Steenberg is the southern-most wine farm in the Constantia Valley, it thus benefits greatly from the cooling influence of nearby False Bay. Since1990, some 68 ha have been planted, comprising of a number of cultivars including its flagship cultivar Sauvignon Blanc as well as Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz and Nebbiolo. Set amidst the vineyards at the foothills of the Steenberg Mountain (Stone Mountain), with spectacular views across the vineyards, Constantia Valley, and with False Bay in the distance, Bistro 1682 is a sophisticated, modern daytime restaurant. Here food and wine will be brought together in a feast of the senses, incorporating the Steenberg Winery, Wine Tasting Bar and Tasting Lounge. An interactive modern space, Bistro 1682 will feature earthy natural textures and colours, with a terraced dining area leading to enchanting indigenous gardens. An intricate labyrinth will complete a multi-sensory wine destination experience set to entice visitors to stay, relax and enjoy the wine and cuisine of the Constantia Valley. Intrepid chef and bistro dining specialist Brad Ball (35), of the River Café and Olympia Café fame, has been appointed to orchestrate the 70-seater Bistro and a unique Raw Bar. With counter seating, the bistro will feature interesting, healthy and delicious raw cuisine that will be freshly prepared on order by designated Chefs.
The Golf Course The Steenberg Golf Club is an exclusive, private golf club set in idyllic surroundings in Constantia, Cape Town, Western Cape. The course attracts golfers seeking a total golfing experience. Known for its hybrid plan, it offers traditionalists the opportunity to “bump and run” (a rare shot in South Africa) in the rough around the greens, and to meet the challenges of strategically placed sand pits and waterways. The par-three, not-so-short 14th hole, features the largest green in Africa at 76 meters in length; indigenous shrubs guard the green and the mound has been shaped to echo the distinctive mountain range behind. Steenberg has always been named as one of the best conditioned courses in South Africa Golf Digest’s annual Top 100, consistent in its improvement each year. The 18 hole course was designed to make full use of natural features and hazards such as the vineyards, pine forest and gentle waterways. Its environmental diversity gives the course its unique character. The Steenberg Golf Club is open to the public, but priority and special green fee rates are given to hotel guests and members. The well-designed and refurbished clubhouse has seen many golfers enjoying the 19th hole.
