Weather and Climate in Greenland Greenland is a landscape with a harsh, frozen climate. About eighty percent of this semi-independent Danish province is beneath ice up to four feet thick in places. Greenland's summer days are long and light, while its winter days are dark and cold. The region is often the backdrop for meteorological and climate research. The large ice sheet is carefully monitored to reveal the effects of a warming climate. Ice cores are collected for the information they contain about what the earth's climate was like hundreds of thousands of years ago. Greenland's west coast boasts a relatively warmer climate, with average summertime highs remaining above 6C/40F. Nuuk, a west coast city south of the Arcitic circle, experiences mid-summer temperatures of as high as 10C/50F. The east coast is colder than the west coast. Temperatures can vary greatly and frozen temperatures during the summer do occur. Green pastures characterize the summer landscape of the far south of Greenland. Rain comes to this southern area about every three days. The heart of Greenland is inhospitable, with summertime temperatures rarely reaching above the freezing mark. Wintertime temperatures in central Greenland are hostile with temperatures ranging from -20C/-4F to -60C/-76F. During winter, Greenland is shrouded in dark, cold and snow. Occasionally, coastal areas will creep above the freezing mark, but for the most part the landscape remains frozen. To check the current weather condition of Greenland please click here
