InterContinental Hotels, renowned for its international portfolio of historic restorations, purchased the property in 1988 and immediately began renovations. It was the original athletic club's 1930 yearbook, the SCIMITAR, which guided much of the original work which was used to replicate the restore entire rooms - right down to the detailing in the draperies, carpets, and murals, throughout the entire hotels.
InterContinental Hotels recently engineered another multi-million dollar, sweeping renovation completed in 2001, featuring the four-story lobby with grand staircase and cast bronze ornamentation, 807 newly refurbished guest rooms and suites, and over 40,000 square feet of choice conference and banquet facilities, all resulting in a brilliant merger of old-world elegance with 21st-century craftsmanship.

LOCATION
The InterContinental Chicago enjoys the premiere Chicago address, located on the famed "Magnificent mile" in the heart of the city's finest shopping, entertainment, and cultural attractions. Some of the most notable places of interest are in walking distance/close proximity to the hotel, such as the Art Institute, Field Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Water Tower Place, Navy Pier and Shedd Aquarium. The InterContinental Chicago is 16 miles from O'Hare International Airport, and 12 miles from Midway. Each room includes a 27--inch television --with first run pay--per view movies, HBO and cable access, oversized desks, and dual line telephones with computer compatibility, voicemail, and high speed Internet. Mini bars, irons and ironing boards, clock radios and coffee makers are all standard in--room features at the InterContinental Chicago. State of the Art Fitness Center & Pool
Directly above the hotel's Grand Ballroom is the historic Junior Olympic indoor swimming pool. The original Medinah Athletic Club included a gymnasium, running track, bowling alley, golfing and archery ranges; the pool was the only element to survive the years. Considered an engineering feat at the time it was built in 1929 -because it was above ground, the pool holds 120,000 gallons of water. Famous for its many visitors over the years, it was the personal favorite of Johnny Weissmuller, the Olympic gold medallist and original Tarzan star.
Adjacent to pool, the hotel's state of the art Fitness Center spans three levels, and is one of the largest hotel Fitness Centers in Chicago. Including men's and women's private locker facilities, spacious shower stalls, dry saunas, and dedicated cardio/aerobic and strength training rooms, this comprehensive and full service Fitness Center is available to its guests 24 hours at a cost of $12.00 per day or $16.00 per stay.
