| HOTEL DESCRIPTION |
Centrally located on the border of North Beach and Chinatown, on the outskirts of the Financial District, the SW (Sam Wong) Hotel was originally known as the Columbo Hotel when Dr. Samuel Wong bought it in 1958. Since then, it has been completely renovated with the flavors of the two neighborhoods it resides in.
Born at the turn of the century, Sam immigrated to the United States in 1920. Leaving behind his then-pregnant wife, he came to pursue what all immigrants aspire to attain – the American Dream.
Working his way from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Sam made his way to Quincy, Illinois. There he settled down and started his restaurant business, The New China Cafe. Many judges and politicians frequented his restaurant and from the friendships developed, these mentors provided Sam with wise business advice. From there his love of politics and community efforts won him an invitation to the White House by President Truman, whom he found to be a perfect host. With the help of his friends, Sam was able to bring his wife, son, and daughter-in-law to the United States. His six grandchildren were all born in Quincy, and in 1958, Sam decided to move further west and settled in San Francisco, California.
Dr. Wong became a well-known and respected community leader, not only in San Francisco, but nationwide in the Chinese communities of America. He was involved with charities and civil rights issues and encouraged many of the politicians of his time (Phil Burton, John Burton, George Moscone, Dianne Feinstein) to further the cause of the Chinese people.
A historical board in the hotel honors his many accomplishments attested through various newspaper articles from Herb Caen to Dick Nolan, and his "hometown" of Quincy, Illinois.
In the eclectic lobby of the SW Hotel, you will find many pieces of Dr. Wong's art collection that were given to him as gifts by his well-known artist friends, including Cheung Dai Ching, who was known as the Chinese Picasso and was one of Dr. Wong's closest friends.
The SW Hotel continues in the tradition of its hospitality to the city and remains as a landmark, providing a piece of history for San Francisco's rich and diverse culture. |

Offering the ideal setting for a private social function, our two-level mezzanine – carpeted upper level and slate-tiled lower level – is 2,100 sq. ft. of open space that is well suited for receptions, sit-down buffets, and birthday celebrations. The unusual blending of contemporary furniture (formal and casual) with poetic antique Chinese artwork in contrast with American modern lithographs individualizes the tiers of sitting quarters, providing an unassuming but cozy elegance. |
