HOTEL DESCRIPTION: Located at 7000 feet near the heart of Shimla, the ‘Queen of The Hills ', Woodville Palace is the Kohinoor on this queen’s crown. Stepping into the impeccable Woodville Palace of the Royal family of Jubbal is like stepping into a time machine where one is transported to the British Raj of the 1930’s. The palace is adorned with multi level rose gardens and lawns. It is also considered a gateway to lesser-known and equally spectacular hill stations of Kufri and Chail.
HOTEL ACCOMMODATION: Hotel Woodville Palace houses 31 rooms, inclusive of the royal cottage and royal suite, which have been tastefully decorated into theme rooms. In the tradition of most heritage hotels, no two rooms are alike in décor and yet they offer that same high quality service and comfort to the guests. As a premier heritage hotel in Shimla, Woodville Palace offers a number of facilities to make the stay a pleasant one. The rooms are equipped with telephones, television with satellite channels and running hot and cold water. Besides, Woodville Palace has a number of multi cuisine restaurants that offer Indian, Continental and Regional cuisine that are a true gastronomical delight. Apart from the wonderful and congenial room service, doctors on call are also available should a guest feel unwell.
HOTEL FACILITIES: The Reception Area As one walks into the reception area, the grand and intimidating portrait of Raja Rana Sir Bhagat Chand of Jubbal State greets the guests. Done up in imperial colours in the ‘art deco’ of the 1930’s and decorated with art from the bygone years, the reception area is just the beginning to the lavish ‘British Raj’ experience of Woodville. The Reception is merely a prologue to the fantastic experience that is Woodville Palace.
The Tiger Lounge: The Tiger Lounge plays host to a number of massive tiger trophies and object d’art that grab the attention of art connoisseurs. After a view of this impressive lounge in its golden and earthy hues, the source of its name no longer remains a secret! It is one of the major attractions of the hotel and recreates the lavish lifestyle of Indian kings and their love for hunting.
The Hollywood Bar: The Tiger Lounge leads to the Hollywood Bar, where there is a tasteful display of signed photographs of the 1930’s Hollywood stars. Amidst this framework of glamorous faces lies the stunning photograph of the Princess of Jubbal who married the Maharaja of Kapurthala. She lived up to the image of an exotic Indian queen. In her heyday she was the toast of Hollywood. Elaine Williams wrote a book on the princess, titled ‘The Memoirs of a Rebellious Princess’. Autographed copies signed by her daughter, Rani Ourmila Devi, who resides in Woodville Palace, are available for guests and visitors. From Clark Gable to Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson who made “Staying on” in 1980. Woodville Palace has played host to famous personalities over the years, the most recent ones being Congress President Ms Sonia Gandhi, High Commissioners and Ambassadors as well as Captains of Industy.
The Imperial Banquet Hall: Further down the Hollywood Bar, is the Imperial Banquet Hall, now a formal dining hall for guests. Extravagantly inlaid woodwork tables are laid out in French and English bone china from Royal Doultan. The walls are lined with Paintings and Lithographs done by British artists. The Art Deco ethos of the Woodville Palace Hotel permeates in this dining hall and even as one sits down to enjoy the tasteful Himachali cuisine, the British era of the 1930’s is re-captured so tastefully that one does not know which to give attention to: the scrumptious food or the elegant décor!
The House of the Rising Sun: The House of the Rising Sun is the latest offering by Woodville to its esteemed guests. A multi cuisine restaurant, The House of the Rising Sun was recently inaugurated by none other than Indian film star Amitabh Bachchan. The architecture of the restaurant is truly appealing. You can see the bamboos and deodars through the glass structure of the restaurant. With the nature around you and scrumptious food on your table, a perfect evening awaits you here.
The Conference Room: The Conference Room of Woodville is one of its major attractions. Besides being wide and spacious, it offers scenic views of the apple orchid and woods. Holding a conference amidst nature has its own charm, and that’s how our conference room differs.
