AREA Penang consists of the island of Penang and a coastal strip of the mainland called Province Wellesley. The island is approximately 14 miles (23 kilometers) north to south and 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) east to west. The island and the mainland is separated by a channel 1.9 miles (3 kilometers) wide at the closest point and 8 miles (13 kilometers) at the farthest.
