Area
Penang consists of the island of Penang and a coastal strip of the mainland called Province Wellesley. The island is approximately 14 miles (23 kilometers) north to south and 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) east to west. The island and the mainland is separated by a channel 1.9 miles (3 kilometers) wide at the closest point and 8 miles (13 kilometers) at the farthest. They are linked by the 8-mile (13.5 kilometers) Penang Bridge, the 3rd longest of its kind in the world. The main city of Penang is Georgetown.
Geographical Information
Penang is situated on the north western coast of peninsula Malaysia, bounded by the state of Kedah to the north and east, to the south by the state of Perak and to the west by the Straits of Malacca and Indonesia. It is the largest city in Malaysia, after the nation's capital, Kuala Lumpur. It is centrally located in South East Asia, only hours away from the major cities of Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Jakarta.
