For exquisite dining, the banana garden promises a magnificent setting. Traditional Maldivian architecture lends the interiors grace and opulence. The rich international buffet is colourfully presented in a dhoni - (a local Maldivian boat). Our inspired chefs turn out the tastiest of breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. One of the main excitements during the buffets is the show cooking, where certain dishes are cooked right in front of you!

Maldivians enjoy a variety of different types of fishing. The most popular among these is night fishing. The dhoni (a traditional boat) leaves the island and anchors at a reef before the sunsets and darkness sets in. The lines are tethered with hooks and sinkers and dropped overboard from both sides of the dhoni. If the fishing is good it gives a lot of excitement to everyone. If not it gives you an excellent opportunity to relax under the night sky as the boat gently rocks with the waves. On your request the fish you catch can be prepared for your dinner. The types of fish caught may include barracuda, red snapper, grouper and trevally.

Fishing has always been a way of life in the Maldives, as the Indian Ocean is extremely rich in fish. Infact the Maldives is simply among the world's best fishing grounds. Small, quaint, and densely settled, Malé (pronounced 'Mar-lay') is not spectacular, but quite unique as a capital city. It's clean and tidy, with mosques, markets, a maze of small streets and a certain charm all its own.

Male’ is the commercial and political hub of the country. It is home to all government ministries and departments, all of the larger private companies, banks, communications and the key institutions and the key institutions that control the nation’s economic and social life. It is here that goods change hands, be it imports of merchandise ranging from building materials to food and clothing or goods for export such as dried or slated fish. Male’s inner harbour is crowded with dhonis and boats of different sizes that form the lifeline between the islands and the nation’s capital.

The island of Malé is about 2km (1.2mi) long and 1km (0.62mi) wide, and packed to the edges with buildings, roads and a few well-used open spaces. The size of the island has been more than doubled through land reclamation projects and nearby islands are used for the airport and other purposes.

Among the city's modest attractions is the National Museum, which houses untidy exhibits of the sultans' belongings and a smattering of Thor Heyerdahl's archaeological discoveries - many of the ancient stone carvings and figurines are featured in his book The Maldive Mystery. Near the museum is the pleasant Sultan Park, and the imposing white Islamic Centre & Grand Friday Mosque which dominates the city's skyline.

Not surprisingly one of the most exciting places to visit while in Male’ is the Fish Market. Located in Boduthakurufaanu Magu right across the waterfront the Fish Market is where all the fish that is landed in Male’ is bought and sold.

All of the main streets of Male’ are lined with shops offering a variety of goods. Among them are many souvenir shops selling some quality local handicrafts and an assortment of Maldivian and imported souvenirs. Also a variety of restaurants serve specialty Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai and Sri Lankan dishes.

Dhonveli Beach & Spa is located right in the heart of the best surf areas of the region. With the region's most consistent break, Pasta Point, less than sixty seconds walk from your room and Sultans, Honky's and Jailbreak only five to ten minutes away by boat it doesn't matter what the conditions are, you're in the right spot.

Dhonveli regulates the number of surfers to a limit of approximately 25-30, however the resort facilities are available to all guests and their families. Annually we have over 70% repeat bookings and a further 25% that are direct referrals from past clients.

The Surf Season
The Surf Season runs from mid February to November when swells are produced by winter low pressure systems in the southern Indian Ocean.

The early part of the season has the most stable weather, with light, favourable winds. Swell consistency and size improve from February, with March, April and May having very clean conditions.

June to August have the most potential for big swells (the WQS contest is held in June every year), although small tropical storms can be more common in these months.

September and October are also very consistent months for swell, with variable winds and small tropical storms becoming less frequent. November is still quite consistent for small to medium size waves and the weather is usually perfect.

The Surf Guides
Our surf guides are bilingual Maldivian surfers who know the waves and the unique conditions that affect surf quality. Any alteration in winds, tides and currents in the Maldives can cause variations in the surf that requires real local knowledge to understand, and without competent guides many good sessions can be missed.

The surf guides have their own private radio frequency band, registered with the Department of Communications to ensure reliable communication between the boats and Dhonveli at all times, the only surf operation in the Maldives with this communication and safety setup.

Surf Equipment
Bring everything you need because surfing equipment is sometimes unavailable in Maldives. Most surfers will find a short fun board suitable for most conditions in the Maldives, but bring a longer board for bigger swells. The water is warm enough to swim without a wetsuit, though a light suit or rash vest is a good idea, for protection from the sun and from the coral. Booties are essential for picking your way over exposed coral reefs, and a helmet is recommended.

If you love diving there is no better place in the Maldives! For Dhonveli is ideally close to several of the best “world class” diving sites in Maldives, with submerged reefs rich in marine life including rainbow-coloured fish and coral gardens. The warm tropical temperature with an average of 24 degrees Celsius and clear visibility at more than 30 metres gives you the best underwater experience you can ever have.
