Terelj camp is set in a spectacular valley only an hour’s drive from Ulaanbaatar. Visitors can view fascinating rock formations against a backdrop of pine-covered mountains and wander along the wooded banks of mountain stream. Guests can stay overnight in a snug Mongolian Ger (traditional Mongolian dwelling) or in cozy guest rooms. It is an ideal place for taking a trip on horse along the Tuul River or the valley and

Manzushir Monastery, located in the lush of Bogd Khan Montain less than an hour’s drive from Ulaanbaatar, is open from May through October. Visitors can hike on forested mountain slopes and explore the ruins of an ancient Manzushir Monastery, which served as a Buddhist temple before the People’s revolution and transition into socialist system.

The Hustain Nuruu Protected Area lies 100km southwest of Ulaanbaatar, and was established in 1993 to preserve Mongolia’s wild Takhi horses and the environment in which they live. This horse was unique to Mongolia where it existed until the 1960s. Since then, these beautiful animals have been reintroduced from captivity, and they have taken well to their freedom. They are not particularly afraid of humans and the harems (one stallion and several mares) will come quite close.

* Visit the local museum. Drive to Hustain Pike to see Przewalski wild horses in their natural habitat (5km).
