Native Village Inn
Uhaj Village, Banaue, Ifugao Province, Philippines Hotel Rating :| HOTEL DESCRIPTION | ACCOMMODATION | HOTEL FACILITIES & AMENITIES |
The Ifugao cottages. These are the traditional houses of the Ifugao people. Notice the very intelligent workmanship in their construction, the four solid vertical posts with the wooden disks to prevent entry by rodents (similar to those once used by ships in port). Then at the next level there are hardwood horizontal beams, followed by more vertical posts, then ending in the thatched roof hanging from the center post. All this is done by cutting mortar and tenon then tying pieces together by means of rattan cordage; not a single nail is ever used in an Ifugao house. We were so impressed with this form of construction that we designed our hotel in this manner. And the National Museum in Manila apparently was impressed as well because they have an Ifugao house on display.

The Ifugao cottages, internal view. Opass wrote: "I found the Ifugao houses more impressive than the terraces. I stayed at the Native Village Inn, a hotel where the guest “rooms” are really native houses. Because of the laid-back lifestyle there in the mountains I’d often return to my cottage to read or relax. But I’d instead find myself looking up and studying for long periods the complexity of the interior of the houses. They really are works of some very intelligent engineering."
