LAOAG - the gateway of the North, is the major crossroads for international trade and commerce in the Ilocos region. Though bustling with business, the city has retained pretty much an unhurried, laid-back lifestyle. Dominating the city landscape is the provincial capitol which sits atop Ermita Hill, also popularly known as Raquiza Garden.
Ilocus Norte is found in the north-eastern tip of the island of Luzon. It boasts of the white sand coves of Pagudpud and Paoay Church. Built of coral blocks and stucco - plastered bricks, which is a unique combination of a Gothic, Baroque and Oriental architecture, the Paoay Church is included in the UNESCO'S World Heritage List .

VIGAN - Ilocus Sur is famous for the historic town of Vigan , which was also inscribed in UNESCO'S World Heritage List. It is replete with ancestral houses in varying Spanish-Mexican -Chinese architectural styles . Ilocus Sur is also the home of the centuries -old Sta. Maria Church ,used as a fortress during the Philippines Revolution of 1896, which is a national landmark ;and Tirad Pass, where Gen. Gregorio del Pilar died in the last stand of the Filipino Revolutionary Forces of General Emilio Aguinaldo .
According to history Vigan got its name from an anecdote carried by the tongue of generations, which tells of a Spaniard walking along the banks of the Mestizo River and there he met a native of the place and stopped to inquire: “Como se Ilama usted de esta lugar?” The native, not understanding a word of Spanish, scratched his head and upon seeing that the Spaniard was pointing to a plant, exclaimed in Ilocano: “Bigaa Apo”. Bigaa being Alcasia Macroniza, a giant Taro plant belonging to the Gabi family which used to thrive at the bank of the Mestizo River. From the name of the plant – Bigaa, whence Vigan derived its name.

PANGASINAN - The Province of Pangasinan which hosts the Hundred Islands Nature and Recreational Park , off the coast of Lucap in Alaminos . These islands and islets look like giant turtles and on many points between the islets the waters are shallow ideal for swimming and snorkeling . It is also the home of the Church of St. James Fortress ,which was built by the Agustinians in 1609.
Pangasinan was one of the early provinces into which the island of Luzon was divided after the arrival of the Spaniards. Etymologically, the term Pangasinan means the "place where salt is made", owing to the rich and fine salt beds which were the prime source of livelihood for the province's coastal towns. The local product that has become synonymous with Pangasinan is bagoong, or fermented fish sauce. Salt of course, is the prime ingredient. Mud-colored with a strong smell, bagoong has captured the national palate. Native cuisine, mostly Ilocano in origin, owes its authenticity to the lowly bagoong. Taking from the spare and starkly humble lifestyle of the Pangasinense with his dependence on the sea and rivers and the land, bagoong lends itself well to the local diet. Mixed with plain fresh vegetables like okra, squash and eggplant in an invigorating broth or as a dip for grilled catfish or Bonuan bangus, bagoong brings out the true flavor of the land's origins . |
