Founded in 1723, Hsinchu has many historic monuments. Rich vermicelli and gungwan (a sort of meatball) soup are local specialties. It is very windy in this city, so Hsinchu is also called "Windy City". The foundation of the Science Industrial park has recently made Hsinchu an internationalized hi-tech city.
