LOCATION: In
the very heart of the historical center of Ghent, in front of the
City Hall and the Tourist Office you will discover this magnificent
monument. The Cour Saint Georges dates back to 1228 and is considered
to be the oldest guest-court in Europe. The history of the Cour
St. Georges starts with the cross-bow guards of the St. Joris Guild.
In the early Middle Ages, they had to protect the walls of the City
of Ghent against danger from the outside. These cross-bow guards
often came to the Cour Saint Georges for there supplies, to offer
there horses some rest and it is said that they also enjoyed taking
forty winks on the hayloft of the 'Cour'. SHOW
