Cyprus is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. It is the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean, and a member state of the European Union. The country is situated south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel, north of Egypt and east of Greece.
Nicosia is the capital and largest city on the island of Cyprus, as well as its main business centre. Greek and Turkish are the official languages spoken by the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities respectively. English is widely spoken. French and German are also well spoken within the tourist industry. The currency of the Republic of Cyprus is the Euro (€).
While the majority of Greek-Cypriots are Greek-Orthodox Christians, other denominations are represented on the island, including Armenians, Maronites and Roman Catholics. The Turkish-Cypriot community is predominantly Muslim.
