LITERATURE ABOUT THE FAROES

ART
The inspiration for Faroese art has come originally from the strength and unspoilt nature of the country and from the distinctive Faroese culture; but it has developed over the years along the same lines as other international art forms. This can be seen in the selection of art books which can be obtained in several languages. Here are some examples:

Tróndur Patursson

POETRY AND FICTION IN DANISH AND ENGLISH
Just as with the visual arts, the art of writing has flourished in the Faroes and the islands have likewise produced writers who are well known beyond their homeland. Here are some examples:

Gunnar Hoydal: Under Southern Stars
“A major work of literature - magic, realism, wit and grace, all here in generous abundance. If it were eligible for the Booker prize, and there was justice in the world, this book would surely win it.” Fay Weldon

William Heinesen: De fortabte spillemænd (The Lost Musicians)

Jørgen-Frantz Jacobsen: Barbara
In Tórshavn of the 1700s, Barbara, the alluring widow of the clergyman, captivates the men with her eroticism and naive love affairs. Gossip flourishes and against the background of the wild Faroese landscape and elements she meets her fate. DK 220 pp DKK 91, UK 258 pp DKK 130  DVD DKK 168
