Main Cultural Events in Vilnius, Lithuania 2011

MARCH

March 4th -6th: FAIR  "KAZIUKO  MUGĖ" The traditional folk arts and crafts fair dedicated to the 4th of March, the day of the Patron of Lithuania, St Casimir.

Venues: Vilnius Old Town, Gediminas avenue.

March 11th  : DAY OF RESTORATION OF LITHUANIAN INDEPENDENCE. The Act of Re-establishment of the State of Lithuania was signed on 11 March 1990. On this day, the victims of fights for Lithuanian independence are honoured, the ceremony of hoisting the state flag takes place in the Nepriklausomybės Sq., and brass band parades, performances by various groups, and concerts are organised.

March 18th- 31st:   Vilnius international film festival, also known as „Kino pavasaris", is preparing for it‘s 16th year. The festival will take place on 17th - 31st of March, 2011 Vilnius, Lithuania.

APRIL

April 17th :PALM SUNDAY. Traditionally, on this day ‘verbos',symbolizing Easter palm branches, are consecrated. Verbos from Vilnius' region are considered most beautiful in Lithuania as they are made of many types of dried and dyed plants and flowers.

Venues: by the churches of Vilnius (the Cathedral, Ss Peter and Paul Church,St Theresa Church.

April 24th-25th: EASTER. Games with Easter eggs, singing and dancing, that's what Easter fun outdoors is about in the city's squares and courtyards.

April 1st- May 15th: FESTIVAL "SUGRĮŽIMAI", (The Returns). Annual music festival. Concert halls in Vilnius and other towns of the country see the return of Lithuanian musicians who work or study abroad and who often bring a foreign colleague to the festival.

Venues: Vilnius City Hall, Museum of Applied Arts, Vilnius Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lithuanian Law University,Lithuanian National Philharmonic.

MAY

May 7th: STREET MUSICIAN DAY. On this day professional musicians and amateurs go out into the streets of Vilnius and play music, sing live free of charge. The idea of street musician day became a traditional festival on the first Saturday in May.

Venues: Vilnius downtown

May 2nd-8th : NAUJASIS BALTIJOS ŠOKIS, (New Baltic Dance). International annual dance festival. One of the most outstanding festivals in the Baltic States. Groups from Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, the UK, France, Russia, Poland, Latvia and Lithuania take part in the festival.

Venue: Lithuanian National Drama Theatre, Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre

May 26th - 29 th : "SKAMBA SKAMBA KANKLIAI". The 34th annual international folklore festival will introduce folklore groups from Europe and Asia. Chamber concerts and performances at the city squares will present outstanding soloists and superb ensembles. Evenings of light singing and glee songs, guest concerts, a song hour, dancing at night and various exhibitions will be offered to audiences of various ages and backgrounds.

Venues: The Old Town and Sereikiškių Park.

May 28th - June 15 th : VILNIUS FESTIVAL 2010. Held every year since 1997, this festival features Classical music and invites world-famous performers. Each year the festival has a different concept and presents both traditional and newer music.

Venues: National Opera and Ballet Theatre, Lithuanian National Philharmonic, the Great Courtyard of Vilnius University, St. Bernardines' Church, Forum Palace.

JUNE

June 18th - CULTURE NIGHT - LET THERE BE NIGHT!

Venues: cultural and public areas in Vilnius City.

June 23rd: JONINĖS (Rasos), (The Feast of St. John). The Lithuanian traditional Rasų feast or Joninės is Midsummer Day, marking the summer solstice. During the feast, wreaths are made and set to float down the river, herb markets and herbal magic take place. Wheels and gates twined with herbs are the symbol of Joninės.

Venues: between the "Žaliasis tiltas" (the Green Bridge) and the "Baltasis tiltas" (the White Bridge), Sereikiškių Park, Verkiai Park.

July 1st-6th: INTERNATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL 'BALTICA'

Venues: Various places of Vilnius City

July 1st-August 27th: St CHRISTOPHER SUMMER FESTIVAL. During this annual festival, one may attend concerts of organ and symphonic music, jazz, or choir and wind orchestra performances. Famous international soloists and groups take part in the festival.

Venues: Vilnius churches, Old Town courtyards and concert halls, The Grand Courtyard of Vilnius University, Lithuanian Music Academy, Lithuanian National Philharmonic,Hill Park, City Hall.

 July 6th : CROWNING OF KING MINDAUGAS-DAY OF STATEHOOD. On the Day of Statehood, Lithuania celebrates the day of the crowning of Duke Mindaugas, the founder of the State of Lithuania. Days of Live Archaeology are organised at the foot of Gediminas Hill and in the Old Town where craftsmen demonstrate old crafts, knights can be seen standing in groups, participants listen to old music and are welcomed to the fairs, and concerts of ethnographical bands or other festivities are organised around the city.

Venues: Cathedral Square, various venues of the city.

July 6th-10th: CASTLE FESTIVAL. The Castle Festival, which is held annually, presents the public with Renaissance and Early Baroque material, as well as the spiritual and cultural heritage of the manor of Grand Dukes of Lithuania and promotes its restoration.

AUGUST

September 2nd- 4th: CAPITAL DAYS (SOSTINĖS DIENOS). Numerous highly ingenious and even extreme performances are held in various outdoor venues in the capital during the Days of the Capital. Gedimino Avenue turns into a huge art workshop and a gallery of different national cuisines.

Venues: Cathedral Square and Gedimino Avenue.

September 22nd- 25h: INTERNATIONAL FOLKLORE POKROVSKIJE KOLOKOLA (Chiming Bells). Venues: Kudirkos square, St Catherine's Chirch,  

OCTOBER

September 29th -October 9th:  SIRENOS (The Sirens). International theatre festival Sirens.Sirenos presents provoking and challenging modern European theatre and new impressive projects of the Lithuanian stage.

Venues: Lithuanian National Drama Theatre, Youth Theatre, and other theatres in Vilnius.

October 13th-16th: VILNIUS JAZZ. Cherishing brilliant traditions and demonstrating Lithuania's place in the world of jazz, this is the oldest annual jazz event in Vilnius. The festival is a threshold between East and West, and international jazz critics mention it as an event creating new trends in jazz.

Venues: Vilnius Theatres, other venues places.

October 21st - 29th: GAIDA (THE TUNE). International contemporary music festival.

Venues: National Philharmonic, Congress Palace, Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius City Hall, National Opera and Ballet Theatre, House of Composers.

NOVEMBER

November 10th - 16th: EUROPEAN FILM FORUM SCANORAMA 2011

Venues: Vilnius cinemas

November 16th - 19 th : INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL VILNIUS MAMA JAZZ. The youngest jazz festival in Lithuania, open to all styles and trends of jazz music, has already taken its place among the most significant events both in Vilnius and all over Lithuania.

DECEMBER

All December:  CHRISTMAS IN THE CAPITAL CITY. Lighting the Christmas tree and meeting Santa Claus at Cathedral Square. Christmas music events in Vilnius churches. A Christmas celebration in Užupis; a charity action for orphans and children from foster homes and boarding schools; a Christmas contest for the city environment; a theatrical celebration for New Year's Eve, the Three Magi's procession and a performance at Cathedral square.

Venues: Vilnius Old Town, squares, concert and theatre halls.

December 3rd : WORLD LATIN AMERICAN DANCE CHAMPIONSHIP. Venues: Simens arena

From the end of November to the middle of January : WINTER FESTIVITIES IN THE CAPITAL. Every year winter brings numerous concerts, performances, exhibitions, fairs and other entertainments to Vilnius. The Christmas season is the main religious and most scintillating winter holiday, which lasts until the Three Kings.

December 26th- January 2nd: NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS. Concerts, fireworks, and special effects take place in Kalnų and Vingis parks, Cathedral and City Hall squares. Traditional concerts of classical music are arranged in the National Philharmonic Society, Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Congress Palace, and SS Johns' Church.
