Northern Ireland follows England and Wales for public holidays except that there are two extra ones.

  • St Patrick's Day --- March 17th or the first Monday after it.
  • 12th July --- the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. Traditionally this has always been on 12th July no matter what day of the week it is, but in 2005 the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has announced that in 2008 (when the 12th is a Saturday) the public holiday will be taken on Monday 14th July. (Presumably to allow a joint celebration with the French). This highlights the fact that there are no formal published rules for these dates other than: "the secretary of state will announce the dates for future holidays from time to time".
Public Holidays: Public holidays observed in Northern Ireland are the same as those observed in the rest of the UK (see the main United Kingdom section) with the addition of:
