The magnificent Vila Sol SPA & Golf Resort, which is located in an estate of some 150 hectares, is characterised by its beautiful natural surroundings with a vast range of fauna, animal and plant life. At Vila Sol Golf you will find a fabulous 27-hole golf course designed by the famous architect Donald Steel, which stretches along a wide valley, naturally sculpted by Mother Nature and divided into three loops with three different levels of difficulty: Prime, Challenge and Prestige.

Vila Sol Golf has twice played host to the Portuguese Open, in 1992 and 1993. It was honoured by the Green Globe organisation in 1996 with the Green Flag award, certification of meeting their environmental requirements. In 2001 it won the prize for Best Golf Development, preented by British MP Sir Eric Pickles.

Against this backdrop, full of trees and wildlife, carefully looked after and protected by specialist staff, golfers can discover an environment par excellence  which will envelop them throughout the day. Environment
Vila Sol SPA & Golf Resort, noted for its outstanding natural surroundings in an estate of some 150 hectares, with a vast range of fauna, animal and plant life, is the result of a policy of protection and nurturing of these environmental riches and biodiversity. Since its launch in 1991, Vila Sol has twice been awarded the coveted “Grren Flag”.

At the time of the launch of Vila Sol Golf, there were around 45 species of birds making up the local wildlife. Today there are some 61 listed species, the result of ten very full years of observation and classification.

It is these surroundings, which have come to be such an important part of Vila Sol, that provide the perfect breeding ground for various species of birds such as, for instance, the Purple Gallinule and white swan. But you can also find examples of other rare species which have chosen the resort as a stop-over point during their migration or, put another way, their preferred winter holiday home.

Donald Steel, architect of the golf course, says, “Vila Sol is living proof that dreams can come true. Here in the greenest depths of the Algarve, half of the 150 hectares were set aside for the construction of this beautiful 27-hole golf course . .. You can see so many trees here: umbrella pines, figs, almonds and even the oak whose cork has a history here going back over 300 years. Hundreds of trees were preserved around the estate . . . the earthworks were kept to a minimum, only a quarter of the usual amount used for the construction of a golf course of this type, and even then only to enhance the natural characteristics of the countryside. Flowering bushes, plants and flowers border the undulating fairways.”

The climatic conditions and location of Vila Sol have encouraged the growth of vegetation cover with narrow leaves, resistent to dry conditions and with great landscaping interest (trees, bushes, under-shrubs and herbaceous plants). The golf course is home to more than 60 types of plants, a large majority of which are native to the Mediterranean region, with its richness in birdlife.

At Vila Sol SPA & Golf Resort, the commitment to the protection of the environment is constant, and involves the implementation of strict rules covering construction.
