San Marino is a Republic to be lived, known and explored.
A dream trip amid museums, ancient forts and palaces, immersed in a fairy tale world.
Palazzo Pubblico - n the neogothic style, this Romanesque building was the work of architect Francesco Azzurri (1894) built over the foundations of the original 'Parva Domus Comunis'. The building was recently reopened after being restored by the architect Gae Aulenti.
Changing of the Guard - The Nucleo Uniformato della Guardia di Rocca (Uniformed Guards of the Fortress) perform honour service at the Palazzo Pubblico in Piazza della Libertà, and the 'changing of the guard' ceremony is performed every hour on the half hour from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the summer months or, more specifically from mid May through the end of September.
The Guardia di Rocca guard, was originally founded in 1754, and currently has two departments: the Nucleo Uniformato (Uniformed Guards) and the Compagnia d'Artiglieria (Artillery company).
The Nucleo Uniformato serves to keep public order and guards the Country's borders, territory and its various institutional sites.
The Compagnia d'Artiglieria, on the other hand, serves for national ceremonies and holidays.
The uniform worn by the Guards of the Fortress when on duty and during the changing of the guard is quite suggestive with a dark green double-breasted jacket decorated with red and white braiding, red trousers with a green stripe and a cap (kepi) with red pom-pom and white spats. The ceremonial uniform also has golden epaulets and a leather helmet with red and white ostrich feathers.
National Museum - Housed in the Palazzo Pergami, this museum holds archaeological and artistic testimony of the history and legend of the Republic of San Marino. The museum includes an archaeological section holding findings that date from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages and a painting gallery that houses paintings from the XIV-XIX centuries including works by Guercino, C. Gennari, M. Loves, E. Sirani, P.Batoni.
Rocca Guaita fortress (first tower) - First fort built in the XI century and restored several times. Some of the rooms were used as a prison. To the left of the entrance is the Chapel of the Rocca, dedicated to Saint Barbara.
Centro Naturalistico Sammarinese (San Marino Nature Centre) - The C.N.S. arouses awareness of the most significant natural environments in the San Marino area, faithfully reproducing them in five dioramas. In addition, there are exhibition sections dedicated to the fauna (all European birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates) and the mineralogy, geology and palaeontology of the San Marino territory.^ Travel Tips
