HOTEL DESCRIPTION: Long ago in 1905, at the time of setting up a modern urban-planning image of Ljubljana after the great earthquake of 1895, one of the biggest, most advanced and most comprehensive hotels in Southeast Europe was built – the Grand Hotel Union. It had 87 rooms, a modern restaurant, a cafe, a large concert hall (today's Union Hall), a bowling alley and a number of reception rooms for gala events. The hotel featured an elevator, central heating and a telephone, which were rarities in those days.

On the occasion of the opening of the hotel, the Slovene newspaper Slovenski narod said: "The Union Hotel is the first large-town hotel facility in Ljubljana. Not even Gradec or Trieste has such a hotel, not to mention other towns that are a match for Ljubljana." The hotel was built in just 18 moths and the opening ceremonies lasted for 7 days. The architect of the Grand Hotel Union was the Croatian architect Josip pl. Vancaš, an expert on the Vienna architectural style, who, in addition to the abundant secessional exterior, also provided the richly decorated interior, which is largely preserved to this day in its original form.

Every year from June onwards, the Union Garden restaurant presents the complete culinary offer of the Grand Hotel Union in an outdoor garden of century-old chestnut trees, where you can enjoy the tastes of international, Mediterranean and traditional Slovene cuisine for lunch or dinner, or you can just indulge yourself with a dessert made by our in-house confectioners.

The elegance of the ambiance and the solace of a cup of finest tea or coffee is a good choice but, after an arduous day, it is best with a special cocktail or a glass of superior quality wine. Open: Monday - Friday 8am to 12pm Saturday, Sunday and Holidays 8am - 10pm

The Grand Union Café has been an integral part of Ljubljana's vibrant pulse since 1905 and it was a centre of the social life of the upper classes in the first half of the 20th century.

The ambiance is typical for a traditional cafe, offering union coffee, teas, newspapers and delicious pastries baked in our own kitchen. Ideal for a relaxed conversation or to enjoy our evening theatre performances, cabarets and theme evenings.

The Café is open form Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm and, during evening performances, from 7pm to midnight.
