The Swiss National Park at a Glance:
- Founded in 1914 as one of the first national parks in Europe.
- Aim: The Swiss National Park is a sanctuary in which nature is protected against all interference by men, and the entire flora and fauna are left to their natural development
- Major attractions: Unequaled alpine scenery, re-introduced bearded vulture, golden eagle, capricorn, chamois, stag, marmots, alpine forests and flowers.
- There is only one national park in Switzerland.
- Size: 172.3 km² (0.42% of the area of Switzerland)
- Elevation: Between 1400 and 3173 meter above sea level
- Tree line: 2200 meter above sea level (Engadin only, around 1900 meter in the rest of Switzerland)
- 80 km of trails

Excerpts of the park rules are posted at all trail heads in five languages (German, French, Italian, Romansh and English).
They include the following regulations:
- Humans are visitors, they shall watch and enjoy, but ...
- It is forbidden to leave the marked trails
- It is forbidden to gather any plants including flowers, roots, fungi or dead wood !
- It is forbidden to hunt, disturb or harm animals or to fish !
- It is forbidden to make fires or to use stoves !
- It is forbidden to take any animals into the park, including dogs ! There is a kennel for dogs in Zernez.
- It is forbidden to set up tents or to stay in the park overnight including all parking lots, except in the hotels along the Pass dal Fuorn road or in the Chamanna Cluozza (see below) !
- Visitors must take all their waste out of the park themselves !
- There is a CHF 500 fine if a visitor does violate any of the park rules !
