Holidays in England and Wales

There are eight traditional public holidays generally observed in England and Wales.

  1. New Year's Day holiday --- 1 January
  2. Good Friday --- the Friday before Easter Sunday.
  3. Easter Monday --- the Monday after Easter Sunday.
  4. Early May Bank Holiday --- the first Monday in May.
  5. Spring Bank Holiday --- the last Monday in May.
  6. Summer Bank Holiday --- the last Monday in August.
  7. Christmas Day --- 25 December
  8. Boxing Day --- 26 December

If New Year's Day happens to be a Saturday or Sunday (as it will be in 2005, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2017, etc), the holiday is taken on the following Monday.

Similarly if Boxing Day happens to be a Saturday or Sunday (2004, 2009, 2010, 2015, etc), the holiday is taken on the following Monday.

On the other hand if Christmas Day happens to fall on a Saturday or Sunday (2004, 2005, 2010, 2011, etc), the holiday is taken on the following Tuesday. (This is because the following Monday will either be Boxing Day or the day taken in lieu of Boxing Day).
