16th century:
The Portuguese started trade at this area of the world. 18th
century: The British started trade in this region. 1853:
A treaty signed between the different sheikhs and the British. The region
was given the name of 'Trucial coast'. 1873: The Trucial
Coast was administered by the British. 1952: The seven
emirates established a Trucial Council. 1970: Independence is given
to the emirates.1971: The United Arab Emirates was
established as one country, and was made up with six emirates. 1972:
The Emirate of Ra'sul-Khayma joins the United Arab Emirates. Independent
federation of 7 emirates (imara (t)), making what used to be seven countries
as one. The Day of independence: December 2, 1971 (from
Britain). Inhabitants: 4.7 million (2005 estimate).
On the other hand, UAE nationals are about 20% of the total number of
inhabitants, the other 80% are from different countries of the world.
In the eyes of an observer,
one can say that the UAE is a major part of the region where the Flood
of Noah took place, which covered the GCC also Iraq, and the Southern
part of Iran. As we head west, we also notice how the Flood covered
many countries of the North African Regions, therefore, when at the
UAE you are at a significant Biblical part of human history. Some date
the history of the UAE as far back as 3000 years before Christ, but
if one speaks about the Flood of Noah, then obviously this will take
us thousands of years into the past.

When
visiting the UAE, if you think this is like a Palace built
on sand, then you will realize the effort the UAE put to reach
where it is today. You will have a full day tour at Abu Dhabi,
the capital of the UAE, situated about 170 km. South-West
of Dubai is an interesting excursion. The first landmark before
reaching the city of Abu Dhabi as we leave Dubai is the area
called Jebel Ali Port, the biggest man-made port in the world.
Jebel Ali has a Free Zone that was rated as the Tenth world
Wide, with the new upgrading; the UAE is trying to make it
the first Free Zone in the world in regard to economic value
and as a major part of a major business oriented environment.
To establish business in the UAE, you need a Local Partner
or sponsor for your business with a share of 51%, but the
Free Zone provides you with sole ownership of your business,
and a lot more. There are many Free Zones at the UAE in every
one of the seven States (Emirates), to give you the benefit
of establishing your business at any of those States you desire.
UAE Free Zones are becoming the major player in the region,
especially in re-exports, where goods come from all over the
world to the UAE ports to be re-exported to the neighboring
countries at the GCC, the Middle East and Africa.
As
we enter Abu Dhabi, the first attraction will be the Women
Hand Craft center. Women's Craft Center is a government run
handicrafts Center situated off the Airport Road. U.A.E. Women's
Association carries out weaving, embroidery, sewing, basketry
and other methods of handicrafts. Women's Craft Center is
a good place to see the skills of the local women on display.
You can take the photographs of the handicraft items but not
the artists. The handicraft items made by women are on display
and sale. If you are interested in buying genuine traditional
handicrafts, Women's Craft Center is the right place.
On
the other hand, Abu Dhabi has many of the city's striking
examples of modern architecture showing an intriguing interpretations
of Arabic themes captured in today's modern times materials,
and top of the Art of new buildings. Abu Dhabi ( In Arabic,
literally means: "Father of Gazelle", or the young
Deer) is the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The city
lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Arabian/Persian
Gulf from the central western coast. Abu Dhabi became a wealthy
State because of the Oil industry, also called Black Gold,
which was discovered back in the year 1958, Oil had a tremendous
impact over the progress in the UAE. A reminder of the historical
past is the renovated AL HUSN PALACE - now home of the Centre
for Documentation and Research. A drive along the beautiful
Corniche (water side road) gives a magnificent view of the
city. The last stop will be at the Dhow Yard, where wooden
ships are still being built using simple tools. Qasr al-Husn
Located on Khalid bin AL Walid St, at Abu Dhabi, the White
Fort or Old Fort is the oldest building in Abu Dhabi. The
original structure was constructed back in 1793 as the official
residence of Abu Dhabi’s rulers. Major renovations took
place in 1983. Open 7.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., Thursday from
7.30 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. Closed on Fridays. Admission is free.
Architecturally, Abu Dhabi is a fascinating place where the
domes and minarets Light tower of traditional mosques (Muslim
houses of worship) sit comfortably in the shade of gleaming
futuristic skyscrapers. Tree-lined boulevards, manicured roundabouts/squares,
dazzling fountains and extensive parks soften the modern cityscape.
All the major shopping malls and souqs (Markets) are within
easy reach. A short distance from the city centre the wonderfully
engineered Abu Dhabi Corniche/water side Avenues runs for
8km along the island’s mangrove-fringed and white sandy
shores. Many of the city’s top class hotels and restaurants
are located along the downtown section of this scenic stretch.
As one of the world's most modern capital cities, it boasts
a beautiful cornice/water side Avenues, skyscrapers, The old
fort in Diwan Amiri/main governor’s mansion is restored
to its original glory and is now a center for academic research.
Open souqs/markets have much to offer and a wide variety of
choices from all over the world are available indeed. When
you visit Abu Dhabi, do not forget to visit the Heritage Village
which is located right opposite to the Abu Dhabi Marina shopping
Mall, where you will be able to buy souvenirs that will give
you memories of your visit for a long time.
Abu Dhabi has a population of about 1.85 million inhabitants
(2005 estimate), and the emirate/state covers 67,350 km²,
which is 80 to 87% of all of the UAE. Abu Dhabi is therefore
the largest and most populated emirate among the seven. Sheikh
Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan has been the ruler of Abu Dhabi
since 1966 and the ruler of the UAE since 1971.
Itinerary Duration:
A Full Day with Lunch Required. Child below 4 years is free
of charge. Starting at 8am, with expectation to reach Abu
Dhabi around 9:30 am. During this day you will pass by Jebel
Ali Free Zone, at Abu Dhabi you will see the first attraction

Located
140 kilometers from Dubai at the foot of the mountains, also
the border lines of Oman, the historical city of Al
Ain is known for its modern charms mixed with the
lush of Green in the heart of the Desert, green beautiful
public parks, decorated Round About/Squares, gardens and wide
boulevards. Also known as the 'Garden City', Al Ain (literary
stands for: “The Eye”) is one of the most important
agricultural centers & archaeological sites of the Emirates
as well as a university town, where the UAE actually is planting
and producing a lot of the Vegetables for the local market.
Al Ain is a part of the Emirate/state of Abu Dhabi. And it
is Abu Dhabi’s main resort.
Jabel Hafit - Close to Al Ain, is this craggy
mountain rising steeply from the surrounding desert. An area
noted for its flora and fauna (it is one of the last remaining
habitats of the rare Arabian tahr), the mountain can be accessed
by excellent roads which wind its way right up to the summit,
providing a panoramic view of the Empty Quarter, which used
to be the most difficult part of Arabia for traveling, because
of its vastness and emptiness. Also of an interest are the
numerous caves, sites of archaeological excavations, and Ain
Al Fayda, a top health resort located over a natural hot spring.
At the foot of Jebel Hafeet are hot springs.
The area has been turned green with picnic spots. The Springs
are diverted along shallow channels- ideal for bathing the
feet in steaming therapeutic/Healing waters. When Water was
discovered in this Area, the UAE started investing in it to
bring it to its look today. The Hot Springs sits in an Oases
like area, with Green Grass. (see picture below).

The
Forts/Al Ain Museum - Location within the confines
of Al Jahili fort, the nation's largest museum is divided
into ethnological and historical sections. Interesting displays
include Bedouin artifacts, archaeological excavations of 2700
BC, 500 BC stone instruments and relics dug up from Fossil
Valley.

Al Ain Zoo and Aquarium - The 1969 zoo houses
an extremely large and varied collection of wildlife from
all over the world. The zoo is also well known for its display
of Arabia's indigenous wildlife which includes the spectacular
Arabian Oryx. The Zoo also has a beautiful Aquarium. Al Ain
Zoo and Aquarium opened in 1969 and has since expanded into
one of the largest collections of both common and rare animals.
Arabian antelope and deer comprise a large area of the zoo.
A variety of African antelope, such as oryx , eland , gazzelle
and lechwe can be found in the tree shaded paddocks which
offer excellent breeding conditions.
Qattarah Oasis - This small, beautiful sylvan
oasis studded with date palms and fruit orchards and located
on the edge of Al Ain is noted for its archaeological sites.
Some of the ancient relics found here, including beautiful
Gold jewelry, have been displayed today in the Al Ain museum.

The
Joy of Shopping |
|
Mercato
Mall
Your
first stop will be at Mercato (Italian for market) is the
first themed mall in the Middle East and UAE. This is the
largest shopping mall along the Jumeirah Beach Road! With
its large glass roof, picturesque bridges & small court
yards its hustling & bustling, but find yourself a comfy
corner in one of the cafes for a nicely relaxing time. Mercato
is an inspired creation from well-known Italian architect
Daniele Morelli. The interior of the mall replicates the concept
of several squares (cute & cozy!), with rural scenes painted
on the walls, tall stylish pillars and sparkly-shiny marble
floors (definitely typical for Dubai, not necessarily Italy!
;-) TIP: Traffic around the Mercato Mall can be hellish! Especially
on Fridays & in the evenings. There's a large car park
+ underground parking, but this is (as with many malls in
Dubai) hardly enough. Either get there early, or ask your
hotel reception for free transportation (bus schedule) to
and from Mercato, or take a taxi to avoid circling for a parking
space when you could spend the time shopping!
As
with all large malls in Dubai, the choices are endless. You'll
find pretty much everything you may (or may not) be looking
for! Some of the most important stores & facilities of
the mall include: > Cinema (Century Cinemas) > Virgin
Megastore. > Starbuck's (isn't it annoying how they get
everywhere?!) > Spinney's supermarket. > Bella Donna
Italian Restaurant (Sit outside on the balcony & you can
just about see the ocean) > Fiesta Restaurant. > Paul's
French Bakery (very nice, freshly-baked breads!) > Costa
Coffee. > Food Court. NOTE: The cafes and restaurant within
the mall are Unlicensed - no alcoholic beverages. In the UAE,
only restaurants in hotels may obtain the license to serve
alcohol. Cafes/Restaurants in shopping malls are therefore
not licensed, but usually offer a huge variety of soft-drinks,
"cocktails" & fresh fruit juices. Opening Hours:
Saturdays - Thursdays: 10:00am - 10:00pm. Fridays: 02:00pm
- midnight.
Second
Stop

Madinatjumeirah
On your shopping day Tour, you will have the second stop at
Madinat Jumeirah shopping center, it has
a wonderful cultural look on the outside as seen in the picture
above, while inside is decorated in top of the Modern Art
designs. Hundreds of Thousands of items are displayed for
your purchase desires, you will be shopping with extreme pleasure
under the charm of this setting that has a wonderful special
influence and charm. Madinat Jumeirah - The Arabian Resort
of Dubai, is a magnificent tribute to Dubai's heritage and
is styled to resemble an ancient Arabian citadel. Luxurious
and ornate, this setting is combining the height of opulence
with an overwhelming sense of tradition side by side. Meandering
waterways transport guests to all parts of this intricate
city of senses. Two grand boutique hotels, courtyard summer
houses, a traditional souk/market, Talise Spa, the region's
leading conference and banqueting centre, unlimited recreational
facilities and the superlative Quay Health club - all this
and more. Wonderfully located along sea side, this place has
endless way to leave beautiful memories in you.
A Quick look inside

The
name Madinat stands for a City, while inside this shopping
center, you will feel like you are in a small city like, come
and enjoy the luxury where old and new times join hands.
Third Stop

Ibn Battuta Mall
This Shopping huge Mall is called Ibn Batuttah after the famous
Arab traveler who traveled into many parts of the world, please
see picture below.

IBN BATTUTA MALL: Walking-exercise & shopping:
6 malls in one! One of our more recent additions
to Dubai's fleet of shopping malls; I must admit that Ibn
Battuta is quite spectacular... cheerily by its size! Strolling
through the corridors and the courtyards of the 6 different
countries (India, China, Persia, Egypt, Tunesia & Andalusia)
it took us approx. 2 1/2 hours and we still hadn't seen everything!
It is named after a famous Persian explorer: Abu Abdullah
Muhammad Ibn Battuta was the only medieval traveler who is
known to have visited the lands of every Muslim ruler in his
lifetime. He also traveled to Ceylon (present Sri Lanka),
China, Byzantium & Southern Russia. At first I thought:
what can be so different about this one? Shopping mall after
shopping mall in Dubai basically offers the same stores, same
things & same food outlets. But Ibn Battuta actually has
a "Health Food Court" besides McDonald's, KFC, etc.
which promotes healthy Asian dishes, vegetarian food, salads,
fresh fruit cocktails and so on to the many overweight local
Arab children. Obesity is becoming a problem in the UAE, and
Ibn Battuta surely offers a great health-food and exercise
plan, turning every shopping trip into a walk-a-thon! :-)
There's also a large Fun World for kids and the architecture
of the various courts really is beautiful. For Dubai residents,
our choices of what to do with our free time & weekends
are drastically reduced as soon as summer comes around (June-September),
so there's really nothing else you can do to escape the heat
than to walk around the various shopping malls, meet friends,
go to the cinema, eat - drink - and be merry & cool in
the air-conditioning!
Ibn Battuta has managed to bring in some shops that have opened
their doors for the first time in the UAE, e.g. Sasch, Lego
Technik, Geant Hypermarket, etc. Opening Hours: 7 Days a week,
10:00am - midnight NOTE: This is a nice mall, with lots to
see and do - but if you don't have much time during your visit
to see all the major malls, I'd honestly "skip"
Ibn Battuta and visit the Mall of the Emirates instead...

This
tour will introduce you to the Emirate of Sharjah, also known
as the 'City of Culture'. In this emirate, one of the landmarks
to photographers is the King Faisal Mosque, currently the
largest mosque in the Emirates. We continue then to the renovated
Fort of Sharjah, which was originally built in 1820 and used
to be the Residence of the ruling family. The Al Naboodah
House, the museum for cultural heritage is the next place
to see. This district is also known as the museum area. In
the Islamic Museum you will have an interesting introduction
in all aspects of the Islamic culture. A quick stroll to the
adjacent souks of 'Al Arsa' and to the 'Majarrah Souk' will
take you to our next venue which is the souk 'Al Markazi'
- a treasure chest full of carpets, jewellery and handicrafts.
Here you will certainly find your right souvenir.
After
a short stop for shopping at the Gold Centre, our tour continues
to the Emirate of Ajman and its famous historical museum.
Here you will have a short briefing with excellent displays
about the Emirates past before the oil was discovered. Visit
the old Dhow-building yard and see how these Dhows (wooden
sailing boats) are still built today in the tradition of the
past. This concludes our tour before heading back to Dubai.
