A long promontory of sand, almost divided from the
land by a broad, curving creek, provided a perfect
setting for the old town of Ras al Khaimah. The dhows,
which were the lifeline of the place, could moor in
safety within the sheltered creek whose waters, shallows
and mangroves protected the town from the land. Only
a narrow approach from the south was possible, and
on that side the isthmus was guarded, in the past,
by a wall and towers.
