Essentially a rural area steeped in a wealth of history and heritage, Wear Valley offers a subtle blend of ancient and modern attractions that will appeal to the most discerning tourist.
Mixed farming is practised on the lower valley slopes, but only sheep graze on the upper reaches of the Dale. Here especially, the scenery is quite breath taking and one of the highest classified roads in Britain unfolds into a splendid panorama of colour.
The district contains over 40% of England's largest areas of outstanding beauty and yet is far less crowded with visitors than other better known areas. The district has some of the highest, wildest and finest scenery in England.
