ACTIVITIES
Moso Island has been blessed with an abundance of marine life. One of the most wonderfully diverse marine sites out of Vila, Tranquillity Dive Base on Moso has so much to offer for today's diver and snorkeller. Here at the Dive Base we offer you up to 16 Dive Sites to choose from, weather permitting. Our Dive Sites ( mainly all boat dives) include drop-offs reaching 114 meters in depth, reef Bommie dives as well as coral garden dives, wreck dives, cave and thermal vent dives, drift dives and the list goes on( night dives and shore dives are available on request). Our dive sites have a great range of soft and hard corals , reef fish and large pelagic, eagle rays and a range of marine mammals like dolphins and dugongs. Visibility rarely is below 25 meters and often exceeds 30 meters and water temperature ranges from 25C in the dry season to 30C in the wet season. We have two dive boats and “Island Diver” our main operations boat, has a walk in platform with an easy access ladder at the rear. The vessel has a toilet and a small galley. Shore dives are available as well. We operate dives on a Daily basis or overnight. Most divers do not have to repeat a dive during their stay. A lot of divers however, request to do repeat dives on certain sites.
Tranquillity Bommies (Shore or Boat Dive)
Scattered coral Bommies on white sand covered in both hard and soft coral – fish abound here in all shapes and sizes. Ideal for photography particularly early morning and late afternoon when conditions are generally calm. Dugongs often visit this area and although timid, have actually stayed with divers for more than an hour or so. Turtle sightings are common. There is a pile of buoys and rings from W.W.II & anti submarine net also located here with lots of small fish making their home in the tangle of steel.
Depth: 2 – 20 Meters.
Moso Drift (Boat Dive)
A drift dive sometimes quite strong – lots and lots of fish – large pelagic and a more than likely possibility of Sharks, Barracuda, Grey Whalers Eagle Rays and other interesting marine life. A chance to see the unexpected. Can be a spectacular dive.
Depth: 12 – 20 Meters.
Owens Reef
A figure eight reef from 1 meter down to 20 meters – It has been said that there is a greater diversity of species of coral and fish on this small reef than many other dive sites. A good dive for everyone – includes swim through coral and gorgonian overhangs and lots of fish. Many divers do repeat dives on this reef.
Depth: 1 – 20 Meters.
Wreck of M.V BELAMA
An island freighter of around 200 tons which was badly damaged in a cyclone scuttled close to Owens reef- A diveable wreck where you can swim through the cabins and around the passageways then across the bow section a few meters away from the bulk of the ship. Great introduction to wreck diving without having to go too deep.
Depth: 20 Meters.
Bottle Fish Cave
An interesting and very popular dive site with large fish and scattered remnants of Coca-Cola bottles, plates and mugs from the tugboats which used to maintain the anti-submarine nets during the war. Large grouper and wrasse are often seen here. There is an interesting swim through and close by there are several thermal vents with hot water.
Grouper Gutter
A very interesting dive with large cod and numerous other fish congregating around the gutter. Lots of barracuda and a 500-kg grouper has been seen here several times.
10-20 meters
Paul’s Rock. ( Boat Dive )
Paul’s rock is a rough oval shape reef that has a number of swim through and drop off wall on one end. Many tame fish exists on this reef, as it is a “Taboo Reef” for custom native owners. Fish feeding is part of the dive and usually you can see coral Trout, Trevally and herds of surgeon fish throughout the dive – Coral cover is good and generally there is a turtle or two around the reef.
Depth: 2 – 35 Meters.
